Environmental & Net Zero Policy
Last updated: April 2026
TownSwap is committed to environmental sustainability. This policy sets out our approach to reducing our carbon footprint, operating sustainably, and contributing to the UK's net zero ambitions.
1 Our Commitment
TownSwap is committed to operating as an environmentally responsible organisation. We recognise the urgency of the climate crisis and the role businesses must play in addressing it. Our goal is to achieve net zero carbon emissions from our direct operations and to encourage sustainable behaviour across the communities we serve.
This policy is aligned with the UK Government's commitment to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 under the Climate Change Act 2008 (as amended).
2 Digital-First: Our Environmental Advantage
As a fully digital platform, TownSwap is inherently low-carbon by design. Our platform model provides tangible environmental benefits compared to traditional housing exchange methods:
๐ป
No Physical Offices
Fully remote operations eliminate the emissions associated with office buildings, heating, and commuting
๐
Reduced Travel
Digital listings and messaging replace the need for in-person estate agency visits and multiple site viewings
๐๏ธ
Local Matching
By connecting tenants within local areas and towns, we reduce the need for long-distance moves and commuting after relocation
๐
Paperless Operations
All processes are digital โ no printed forms, brochures, or physical correspondence
3 Our Carbon Footprint
TownSwap's direct carbon footprint arises primarily from:
- Cloud computing & hosting: Server infrastructure used to run the platform
- Remote working: Energy used by team members working from home
- Business travel: Any travel required for business meetings or events
We are committed to monitoring and measuring our carbon footprint and to reducing emissions year-on-year. We select cloud hosting providers that use renewable energy where possible and publish sustainability commitments.
4 Actions We Are Taking
We are actively taking the following steps to minimise our environmental impact:
- Operating as a fully remote team, eliminating office-related emissions
- Using cloud infrastructure hosted in data centres with renewable energy commitments
- Optimising platform code and infrastructure for energy efficiency
- Minimising unnecessary data transfer and server processing
- Choosing suppliers and partners with demonstrable environmental commitments
- Encouraging our team to adopt sustainable working practices
- Avoiding unnecessary business travel; using video conferencing for meetings
5 Community Environmental Impact
Beyond our own operations, TownSwap contributes to broader environmental sustainability through the nature of our service:
- Better use of existing housing stock: Facilitating mutual exchanges helps social housing tenants move into homes that better fit their needs, reducing under-occupation and over-crowding โ and the environmental and social costs associated with poor housing conditions
- Shorter moves: By connecting tenants with local swap opportunities, we help people find homes closer to their existing community, reducing the environmental impact of moving
- Supporting local businesses: Our directory connects tenants with local tradespeople and service providers, keeping economic activity โ and the associated travel โ local rather than supporting long-distance chains
6 Future Goals
We are committed to continuous improvement. Our environmental goals for the coming years include:
- Formally measure and report our carbon footprint annually
- Achieve carbon neutrality for direct operations by 2027
- Publish an annual Environmental Impact Report from 2026
- Verify that all major cloud infrastructure providers use 100% renewable energy
- Develop a carbon offset programme for residual emissions that cannot be eliminated
- Engage with housing associations and local councils to explore joint environmental initiatives
7 Review & Accountability
This policy is reviewed annually. Environmental performance is reported to TownSwap leadership as part of our regular operations review. We welcome feedback and suggestions for improving our environmental performance from tenants, partners, and the communities we serve.
